FDA Advises Consumers Against Certain Zicam Cold Remedies

Intranasal Zinc Product Linked to Loss of Sense of Smell

An FDA Zicam Nasal Cold Remedy warning, advises consumers to stop using three products marketed over-the-counter as cold remedies because they are associated with the loss of sense of smell, anosmia.

Anosmia,  loss of smell,  effect is still unclear, and may be long-lasting or permanent.

The three products in the warning included:

* Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel

* Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs

* Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs, Kids Size (a discontinued product)

The Food and Drug Administration has received more than 130 reports of loss of sense of smell associated with . . . the use of these three Zicam products. In these reports, many people who experienced a loss of smell said the condition occurred with the first dose; others reported a loss of the sense of smell after multiple uses of the products.

The FDA has issued Matrixx Initiatives, maker of these Zicam products, a warning letter telling it that these products cannot be marketed without FDA approval.

If consumers experience harm related to the products, the FDA recommends contact be made with a health care professional.

The FDA also recommends health care professionals and consumer to report possible cases, or any other problem related to the use of the products to the FDA using the MedWatch program at www.fda.gov or by phone at (800) 332-1088.
